This course aims at revising the existing knowledge of English vocabulary (collocations, idioms, and formulaic language) at the B2+ level and moving it further to the C1+ level Developing a nuanced understanding of the English vocabulary at C1+ level Increase your metalinguistic awareness about appropriate word usage across different registers and styles (formal vs. informal vs. colloquial; spoken vs. written) Increase your metalinguistic awareness of word classes (nouns, verbs, gerunds, participles, etc.)
The following topics will be covered during the semester: Countable & uncountable nouns Register - formality & informality Collocations (make, do, take, have, etc.) Word formation (prefixes and suffixes) Homophones/Homonyms/Antonyms/Synonyms Idioms Multi-word verbs/Phrasal verbs Word classes/Parts of speech/Sentence analysis
This is a course with continuous assessment. Credit point requirements include: 1. 100% attendance and active participation in in-class assignments 2. Submitting a vocabulary portfolio at the end of the semester 3. Passing the final test
