-          Students will be able to define the concept of human rights and its history 

-          Students will assess, evaluate, and critique historical and social scientific sources, both primary and secondary, including newspaper articles and documentary films 

-          Students will apply the concept of human rights to historical case studies and current events via readings, seminar discussions, and independent research 

This course surveys the global history of human rights in theory and practice from the United Nations declaration of 1948 through the student and civil rights movements of the 1960s and finally to present-day questions surrounding migration and the movement for Black lives. We will also examine the denial of human rights in recent global history, from the Holocaust via the genocides of the 1990s and up to the present. After reviewing key concepts in human rights and a series of case studies, students will choose their own topics for further research and share their findings with their classmates. 

This Innsbruck version of the course will introduce students to key concepts of human rights worldwide while bringing in new knowledge and experiences from Central Europe, from the Holocaust to present. Using newspapers and documentary films, we will incorporate history and current events in Austria and across the continent and encourage students to learn more about local human rights issues for their own research projects. Cours activities include elements of seminar pedagogy in which students co-create and share course content.
