More and more people in the West are turning East, studying and experiencing the religions of India. The course introduces the students to the scriptures, the main perspectives, doctrines, myths, rituals and schools of four fascinating Indian religions: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. We shall witness the various ways in which people struggled to understand the significance of and the relationship between the Sacred, human beings and the cosmos. While maintaining a constant dialogue with Christianity, the course will also indicate the positive and not so positive contributions of these religions to meet the challenges, needs, tensions and problems of the contemporary world, such as inculturation, modernization, stress, communalism, casteism, racism, injustice to laypeople, women and the poor, and ecological problems. It will conclude with stimulating a brief reflection on the theology of religious pluralism.
