Immigration and immigrant integration are two of the most pressing issues of our times. Since the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1999, the EU has acquired extended competences in the area immigration policy and the regulation of immigrants’ rights, which have become important areas of EU policy. This course investigates EU policy in the area of immigration and immigrant integration, focusing particularly on the role of different political actors and EU institutions therein, as well as on the policy output itself. During this course, students will engage with both theoretical and empirical literature on EU migration policy, as well as immigration, integration and citizenship more generally. The aims of this course are: to provide students with a solid understanding of the process and the outcomes of the Europeanization of immigration policy; to introduce students to the main research questions within the field of immigration and citizenship studies; to foster analytical thinking.
This course will be conducted as a seminar. As a seminar, it will be organized interactively and the participation of all students in the class discussions is vital for the success of the course. All students are expected to have done the assigned readings before coming to class, and to be able and willing to discuss the readings in class. A detailed syllabus and reading list will be distributed to those students who enrol for the course. Students will be expect to read carefully each of the texts assigned and devote time and energy to reflect upon and take note of the text’s arguments, the assumptions behind them, and the texts main strengths and weaknesses.
Active participation in class and completion of reading assignments, in-class presentation, final paper.
A full and updated reading list will be distributed to those who enroll for the course. The following texts provide a good introduction and are listed here in order to give a first impression of the kind of literature we will be dealing with in the course.
