1- Enable students to reflect critically on the economic dimension of environmental problems and their solutions.
2- Understand the role of institutions to modify economic incentives leading to environmental problems.
Learning outcomes (competences)
- Comprehend the relevance of economic incentives and resulting social dilemmas for the emergence of environmental problems.
- Understand the socio-ecological approach to environmental problems with a particular focus on economic incentives.
- Analyze from an economic perspective success and failure case studies for solving environmental problems.
- Compile factors that increase the possibility of users of natural resources to solve the social dilemmas they face.
- Discuss the economic implications of relevant topics in the environmental policy agenda of different countries (developed and developing countries).
- Identify economic motivations for the positions of different stakeholders in environmental conflicts.
- Defend and justify articulated arguments regarding environmental problems and possible solutions making use of diverse economic methodologies.
- Respond creatively to stake economic arguments in environmental problems.
- Develop research reports on the economic aspects of environmental problems.

Presentations: Presentations should follow an ordered structure, when possible with an exposition of motivation, main hypothesis/ideas, how they have been tackled and the results/conclusions. Presentations in class will be 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes discussion from other students.
Debates: Debates might be more or less articulated in advance. Students will be graded according to their participation, previous preparation of arguments and proof of knowledge on the specific topic.
Reading groups: Reading groups will be based in the discussion of readings students will have prepared in advance.
Questions, comments and discussion: Active participation during the whole course will be positively considered.
Active participation during seminars, presentations in class for specific topics, participation in debates, and comments on readings.
