Students shall acquire basic knowledge on the field organization studies with specific respect to its basic ideas, issues and paradigms. Students shall be able to distinguish different approaches to organization studies and should be able to describe the interrelation between historical contingencies and specific discourses within organization studies.

- The concept of organization - The field of organization studies, paradigms of OS - The emergence of modern(ist) Management and Organization - Organizing human relations - Culture and Organization - Neoinstitutionalism - Weber and Bureaucracy - Early and contemporary critique of bureaucracy - (micro)politics and organization, dynamic organization (Sensemaking, Enactment) - disciplinary power and organization.

Written  exams, groupwork and presentation of an organization

Basic literature: Clegg, S., Kornberger, M. & Pitsis, T. (2008= second edition): Managing and Organizations: An introduction to Theory and Practice. London: Sage. For this course chapters 5 (Managing Cultures pp. 217-250); 11 (Managing one best way, pp. 443-483) and chapter 12 (Managing Bureaucracy pp. 485-526) is basic literature You can also use the 3rd edition of this book (2011): the relevant chapters here are: Chapt. 6 Managing Cultures (pp. 215-246); Chapt. 12 Managing one best way (pp. 445-483) and Chapt. 13 (Managing beyond bureaucracy pp.485-518) - additional literature (scientific articles) will be provided via the OLAT system. The book is available at the STUDIA bookshop.

VU (2) Auer/Weiskopf (433050) and VU (2) Weiskopf (433 051) are integrated. They form the basic modul "Approaches to Organization Studies", which is the precondition for continuing the master-programme organization studies. This module is a 5 weeks intensive reading and working arrangement. ATTENDANCE IN THE FIRST LECTURE IS OBLIGATRORY!!!
