Lernergebnis:

Dealing with different types of authentic texts to enhance and extend students’ language awareness and to improve their text-writing skills. The aim is not to train students to produce professional translations but to deepen their awareness of some basic differences (and, of course, similarities) between the two languages.

Inhalt:

Tense and aspect, modals and conditionals, reported speech, word order; translation of German man- and es- constructions into English; strategies for translating culture-specific elements in various texts; false friends, collocations etc.

Methoden:

Translation of authentic German texts from German into English; interlingual textwork; analysis and comparison of parallel texts (e.g. newspaper articles in both languages dealing with the same problem/topic/issue).

Prüfungsmodus:

assignments, written final exam
