This course will build upon previous writing courses in order to further improve participants' professional and academic writing skills. For the professional writing component of the course, students will compose a cover letter for an English-language job advertisement, paying close attention to style and layout. With regards to the academic writing portion of the course, students will be expected to read a short novel and/or short stories and then compose an academic essay, complete with citations, on some aspect of the text. We will focus on the development of a strong thesis statement, organization, and coherence. Students who enroll in this course should expect to dedicate a considerable amount of time to it. Step 1 is to acquire a sense of style, tone, and usage and to develop an awareness of English as a flexible medium of communication. Step 2 is to become knowledgeable about the basic structural elements of essays and to become an effective critical reader of one's own work as well as of other writers' works. Step 3 is to write coherent, focused, and well-organized essays. After this class, you will be prepared not only to write academic essays for future university courses but also to write essay examination answers. The following topics will be covered in this course: • Close Reading Skills • Style • Formal Letters (Cover Letter) • How to Structure an Argument • Thesis Statements • Nonfinite Clauses • Theme and Focus • Error Detection and Correction You are expected to have already mastered the following areas: • Sentence Elements and Sentence Structure • Paragraphing (unity, coherence, cohesion) • Punctuation (commas, colons, semi-colons) • Relative Clauses • Subordination and Coordination • Summarizing • Formal and Informal Letters For those of you who need to review these topics, I will point you to the appropriate materials.
