Students will gain an insight into:

• the history of Political Developments in Britain and (Post-)Colonial Contexts
• an overview of key-political developments
• the use and misuse of humour to ellicit and amplify emotions
• tools and methods do critically evaluatate the politics of affect and emotion
• the analysis of different media regarding their affective nature from paintings and political speeches to memes and social media
• discussions of political campaign strategies and political communication
• an understanding of populist rhetoric and propaganda, (mis-)information
• an understanding of how political figures manage their pubic image from Queen Elizabeth I to contemporary politicians
• understanding of key-terms such as emotion, affect, empathy, narrative empathy

 This lecture will discuss the complex and varied relationships between politics, rhetoric and emotion. We will look at a range of media and genres from paintings and architecture, satire and speeches to social media and memes to gain an overview of how these media shaped affective responses. In doing so, this lecture aims at giving an overview of the major shifts and developments in British and Anglophone discourses and their respective systems from the Magna Carta to Brexit. On the other hand, this lecture will discuss how respective periods conceptualized emotions and affect as either benefitial or detrimental to political thought and action.
