In this course, we examine in detail the major milestones in Cyprus Conflict with a special emphasis on the process of the Cyprus inter-communal negotiations as well as the conflict and cooperation dynamics within the Eastern Mediterranean (EM) region. After a brief introduction of the historical background of the Cyprus Conflict, we focus on the major actors’ interests and positions on the fundamental issues of the Cyprus negotiations in critical milestones such as the 1977 and 1979 High Level agreements, the Set of Ideas (1992), the Annan Plan (2002-2004) and the post- Annan Plan milestones. Finally, we focus on the current peace processes including the first track peace negotiations as well as other peacebuilding activities in other tracks in Cyprus as well as the greater Eastern Mediterranean region.

* Providing the understanding of the major milestones in the Cyprus Conflict where the students would be able to have the basic knowledge of the fundamental issues of the Cyprus Conflict and a general knowledge on the negotiation processes in Cyprus and the EM region.

* Creation of a safe and comfortable discussion atmosphere in which the students will get the opportunity to express themselves and relate their own thoughts and ideas with what they learn in the lectures and from other course material.

* Giving each and every one of the students the chance to get involved in constructive debates with their classmates, and exercise group interaction - in other words, learning from each other.

Course Grade will be computed as follows:

1. Midterm Exam % 40 

2. Participation % 10

3. Term paper % 50

After successfully completing the course, the students are expected

To have a clear grasp of the negotiation processes in Cyprus since 1968

To be aware of and familiar with the content of crucial negotiations related documents on Cyprus

To have a clear understanding of important concepts related to ethnic conflict

To be able to conduct an objective analysis of a conflict

To develop skills in conflict analysis

To develop critical thinking

To be able to clearly differentiate between theory and practice

To come to the awareness of “we vs them” differentiation

To be aware of the problem of the “other”
