The objective of this lecture is that students learn how to develop a research project, which includes the formulation of a research problem/question, the choice and design of an appropriate research method, data collection and data analysis. This should help the students to plan, set up and design their own research project in the course of their master thesis.

In addition, the aim of the course is further to provide an overview of research strategies, research methods and research designs for strategy and innovation research. The lecture should enable students to understand scientific work and get to know more available methods. In addition, quality criteria of research and research ethics will be discussed. The focus of the course is on understanding different research designs rather than on the details of specific analytical techniques.

By the end of this course students will be able to

·        Develop an appreciation for the philosophical and theoretical basis of key research methods in strategic management and innovation.

·        Build up the abilities to inquire, think, and analyze methodological problems relevant to students’ specific interest and fields of study.

·        Understand the fundamentals of quantitative and qualitative research designs and methodology

·        Becoming comfortable with available research methods and of their respective strengths and areas of applicability

§  Define their master thesis research design, which will be critically discussed in class.
